What Would Nyerere Do?
This session theme is pretty straight forward, yet it will be interesting what people make of it. Nyerere is constantly being referred to as the former moral compass of Tanzania. He was also the founder of our Nationalist identity. We are all well aware of the significance of Nyerere on Tanzania, from Ujamaa and Swahili, to Shakespeare and the humility to accept his mistakes. The intention of this theme is to have a series of talks and discussions that are a reaction to this idea of what Nyerere would do. The theme can be interpreted in any way, and is essentially a voicing of what is thought to be best for Tanzania. (or not).
Hadithi Zetu: Creating Content to narrate our stories
Creative content is central to what TEDxDar stands for. It is essential for us to create content of our own, content that will narrate our stories and the intricacies of our identity. Our narrative stems from the historical, traditional, literary, cultural, national, imperialist and globalized.
Talks will discuss issues as varied as the necessary conditions to produce an environment to create content as well as actual creators embarking on the process of creating these narratives. Mediums can vary from new media, fiction, non-fiction, video, theatre, dance and any other forms of creative expression.
The necessity to be able to tell our stories and have our stories heard has never been greater.
In Between Places
Think of the immense interplay and contradictions that take place in the name of nationalism, privatization, neo-liberalism, imperialism and globalisation.
Think of the massive surge of rural to urban migration and the immense levels of urban poverty this has resulted in. Our slums are often looked down upon, but they are the manifestations of these contradictions at work.
An In-Between place is any spatial, conceptual or practical expression of this interplay of concepts and ideas. It is time for us to take a closer look at these middle spaces and find out what they really mean.
